Algunos países desarrollados occidentales, especialmente Europa y Estados Unidos, han comenzado a desarrollar tecnología de plantación en invernaderos con relativa rapidez. Países desarrollados como Estados Unidos, Israel y Canadá han comenzado a utilizar instrumentos para recolectar información in situ en invernaderos y controlarlos en base a indicadores, materializando básicamente la mecanización y automatización de la producción agrícola. Sin embargo, en ese momento, solo se usaba tecnología de control de factor único en el control de invernaderos, es decir, solo se controlaban por separado las condiciones ambientales como la temperatura y la humedad, la intensidad de la luz y el CO2.
